Promoting Sustainable Tourism through Site Management Planning in Jordan

22/07/2025

As part of efforts to advance inclusive and climate-responsive investments in Jordan’s tourism sector, the government is developing site management plans for key heritage locations, with support from the Jordan Growth Multi-Donor Trust Fund under the Program-for-Results on Inclusive, Transparent, and Climate-Responsive Investments.

On 22 July 2025, a field visit was conducted to the Amman Citadel, one of the pilot sites, to observe ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism and preserve cultural heritage. The site management plan aims to enhance the visitor experience, protect the site’s historical value, and ensure accessibility and safety for all, including women, persons with disabilities, and the elderly.

This initiative aligns with Jordan’s broader vision to position cultural tourism as a driver of inclusive economic growth, foster community engagement, and promote environmental sustainability. The site plans are being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Department of Antiquities, and other national stakeholders.

The Amman Citadel serves as a leading example of how strategic site planning can help balance economic development and cultural preservation, while creating meaningful tourism opportunities that benefit local communities and contribute to national development goals.
